Admit it - you really wanted Marian to be the real sharpshooter! Far from a feminist-for-feminism's-sake update, this book is a truly fun read. As a middle-schooler, I read the romantic scenes toward the end many, many times! I especially like the open-ended conclusion, which connects to historical events of the time and, I felt, was the most realistic Robin Hood ending I've read.

Robin...the Hooded Man...
There are sooo many Robin Hood retellings out there it's difficult to write one that stands out. I'm proud to say McKinley did, with her typical imaginatino and realism. The ending is unique, the characters are portrayed differently than usual, but with their characteristic charm. All major events of the Robin Hood legend are incorporated, from the archery competition to Guy -- the mercenary. Definitely one of the best retellings out there, and worth a read even if you're not a Robin Hood fan.

One of the best books ever witten. A long time favorite of mine. An excellent retelling of the story of Robin Hood

fresh take on a very old tale
There are some old stories that get told over and over again, and I delighted throughout my teen years in finding as many adaptations and variations as I could--especially if they were even vaguely UK-related. Robin Hood, of course, is at the top of the charts. This particular adaptation is very well done. It's written for young adults and up, rather than children, which is nice. And McKinley is one of my favorite authors of all time, so I'm always willing to give her the benefit of the doubt right off the bat. Luckily, she hardly needs any help from kind-hearted critics. This story is fun, with strong characters, vivid history, and great adventure. She doesn't leave much out, including lots of familiar characters and traditional plot points (like the archery contest, the golden arrow, waylayings in the deep forest, disguises, and a conflicted love story with Marian). Her male and female characters are equally strong, sharing the spotlight in this ensemble cast. And she presents a very unique ending when the king comes home to his throne. This is one of the stories that inspired me to look into the true history of that royal family and time in history. A great read, and highly recommended.
