Seller's Description:
Hardcover, Octavo, (iv) 2 lxxxii (xvii plates) 381 (i). Modern brown quarter leather with maroon cloth boards. 16 lithographed plates by T. Baxter and one unsigned steel engraving "Deae Multimammiae Imago" all bound together following p. lxxxvii. The true first edition of which only 50 copies were printed for private circulation. The best known work by Sir William Drummond (1770-1828), in which he argued that sections of the Old Testament was actually an allegorical interpretation of the astrological / astronomical beliefs and writings of the ancients. Drawing on authorities such as Kircher, he explored in particular the zodiacs, planispheres, and pantheons of the Egyptians and ancient Hebrew tribes, illustrating his work with engravings taken from the Zodiac of Dendera and other sources. If not outright heretical, the work was certainly challenging to the religious orthodoxy of the time, and despite its tiny print-run and limited circulation still managed to attract some controversy. It was probably for this reason that it was not reprinted until 1866-some 38 years after the author's death-and even then in a limited printing of 250 copies. Modern binding has a little wear to the edges, and the text block sits a little tightly in the binding, but not overly so. There are page stubs between pp. 168-169 but nothing is missing, and it seems likely that these may have been for the plates, which are now all bound together after p. lxxxvii. Faint old ink numbers in the upper right margins of each of the plates giving their sequence (1-16). Approx. 20 pages have some neat pencil annotations. This copy does not have the two pages of advertisements normally found bound in at the rear. Over all a clean VG + copy in a VG + modern binding.
