To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the four nights of adventurous music presented by trumpeter Bill Dixon in 1964 called "The October Revolution," three different groups performed at the Fez Room under the Time Café in New York City. The music by the Zane Massey Trio was unfortunately not usable due to problems with the sound system, but a strong sampling of the other performances is on this CD. The quartet of drummer Rashied Ali (who had been a participant at the original October Revolution), pianist Borah Bergman, bassist Wilber Morris, and Joe McPhee (heard on both tenor and flugelhorn) had never played together before. However, their improvising on the two-part "For Bill Dixon" (the first half is nearly 41 minutes long) is quite coherent, full of energy, and worth a few listens. Between the two sections is a shorter piece featuring pianist Myra Melford, bassist Lindsey Horner and drummer Tom Rainey. It is a pity that Dixon himself, along with more of the original players, were not at this concert, but the music does have its exciting moments. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
