Excerpt from The Octavius of Minucius Felix The information concerning the author contained in the treatise itself is meagre. It is evident that he was a man of considerable education, well read in profane literature (especially Latin), and his style, in addition to a certain legal atmosphere pervading it, shows that he had been well trained in one of the rhetorical schools. He appears to have been converted to Christianity late in life, having been preceded in that step by Octavius, his deceased friend and intimate companion of his youth, from whom the dialogue takes its name. It is evident from his own confession that before his con version he was a bigoted heathen and he speaks quite frankly of the extra cruelties inflicted upon obstinate Christians in a sort of contemptuous pity, in order to make them confess their supposed crimes and so save their lives. He had a flourishing practice as a lawyer in Rome, but does not appear to have held any public office, at any rate not after his conversion he explicitly states that anything of the kind would have involved a violation of Christian principles.
