Seller's Description:
None. Very Good Indeed. An early eighteenth century edition of the great radical James Harrington's works. Compiled with an account of Harrington's life by the Irish rationalist and philosopher, John Toland. Being mostly Harrington's magnum opus, 'The Commonwealth of Oceana'. Harrington's work was originally suppressed by Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell and after it was finally published there was a dedication to Cromwell. The work describes an ideal constitution which allows for the existence of a Utopian republic. Contemporaneously, many viewed the work as a metaphor for interregnum England. Toland was Harrington's first editor. The Toland edition of Harrington's works was first published in 1700. This 1737 edition is the second edition. Toland had republican sympathies, which was evident in his editing of the writings of some of the great radicals of the 1650s. ESTC No. T146276 Repairs to the edges of the title page. Engraved frontispiece, and an engraved plate of the author by Vander Gucht, and one full page plate illustrating the Venetian 'Ballot'. Three plates total. Collated, complete. Rebound in a quarter morocco binding with paper covered boards. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. A few light chips to the frontispiece, title page and final few leaves at the edges. Just the odd spots to pages. Repairs to the edge of title pages. Very Good Indeed.
