This story of an English country town is pitched in a minor key and lacks the popular happy ending. Its central character is Dorothy Jackson, a woman in her mid-thirties whose wealth of love and maternal affection has been given out bit by bit to those about her rather than expended in one great passion. The coming of a popular author, who wins for himself the liking and approval she has not accorded his books, brings a new interest into her life. It seems for a time that the lot of other happy women is to be hers too, but a younger sister, spoiled and utterly selfish, steps in to shatter the romance and the seeds of an illness sown long before In the days that Dorothy devoted to an invalid mother, come to life and complete the tragedy. * * * * * "Notwithstanding its final tragedy, from which it must be said the heroine's abundant and cheerful serenity takes away much of its painful character, the story is pleasing and cheerful and is told with much humor. Sometimes in the dialogue there are touches of that sparkling vivacity that made 'Dodo' a thing of joy. But they are merely touches, and one finds them only occasionally. For the most part the conversations are prone to run into rivers of words. Mr. Benson enjoys himself immensely, and the reader shares his pleasure, with the people of the town." -- NY Times
