Her collaging and mirror-imaging of words are concretions of verbal static, visual meditations on what can and cannot be said. For Howe, "Melville's Marginalia" is the essential poem in the collection, an approach to an elusive and allusive mind through Melville's own reading and the notations in his library books. I recommend this book only because of how utterly awful it is. This is the worst of the worst. This bottom of the barrel poetry is just horrible. Howe has such poor understaning of the beauty of poetry. It is more than upseting to read her work. This book is more than awful, its an insult to poetry itself.
