Katz looks at dogs who have a new role in today's world: filling in gaps in human relationships, providing emotional support and healing companionship. Through many interviews and visits with dog owners, trainers, veterinarians, dog behaviorists and rescuers, Katz analyzes the nature of this new relationship dogs have taken on with humans, scrutinizing the pros and cons, the benefits and repercussions it has on dogs. He presents a lot of interesting questions, speculations and some answers about how the role of dogs in our lives is gradually shifting and what it may mean for them.... and about us.

helpful for dog lovers
Another fine book by Katz. He did a good job of providing many views of how dogs fit into modern American society. Some of the stories are very sad, but this book will get you thinking about your own relationship to dogs, about what our relationship to them means today, and possibly, hopefully, how we can improve our treatment of them. I like his own take on the dog world which encompasses kindness and good sense and an emphasis on training, while always remembering they are another species altogether.
