This version of the Oxford Book of Food Plants (1997, 1998 reprint, original 1969) first caught my attention a few years back when working at the local university. Different people wanted this book, agricultural experts, nutrition scientists, and foodies. A somewhat regular book until you open the cover and discover the stunning color illustrations inside - nearly every second page showing in almost photographic detail the various common and less familiar crops. The pictures themselves are suitable for framing; just pick your favorite foods from among grains, sugar crops, nuts, legumes, fruits, vegetables, herbs, mushrooms, seaweeds and others. Additional sections include information on plant classification, crop domestication, food components (carbs, fats, alcohol - yes alcohol, vitamins, minerals, and other biologically active substances), effects of processing and storage, recommended daily amounts (RDAs), nutrition tables and a comprehensive glossary (worthy of any intro botany course). And all this info this all packed into 239 pages! It may not be the most popular-selling book (I find the real gems tend to be a little exclusive) but it definitely has its admirers for good reason. If you see a copy for a reasonable price, grab one. This one can get quite expensive, as there a lot of people willing to pay top dollar for it when demand exceeds supply.
