Cape Corso is moderately high towards the sea, and inland appears mountainous. ST. FIORENZO.--To the W. S. W. J S. is the Tower of Tolare, from which the land bends S. S. W. W. 16 miles, to the Gulf of St. Fiorenzo, which is broad and deep, having several watch-towers on the eastern coasts, and one on the western side, On Cape Mortella: abreast of this tower is anchorage at three cables' length from land, in 12 and 13 fathoms; or you may come nearer, and anchor in 8 or 9 fathoms, mooring on shore. In approaching from the westward, come not too near Cape Mortella, on account of some rocks which he off it. South of Mortella, about two miles, is Porto Forno: abreast of which, at the distance of nearly one mile, is good anchorage for all ships with 13 and 14 fathoms water, or with 9 and 10 fathoms, withm three or four cables' length of the shore, oozy ground; you will then have the following bearings: --the Town of St. Fiorenzo S. E. by S.; Porto Forno W. N. W.; and Mortella Tower N.N.W. There are some few rocks near the shore, which you must be careful to avoid: small vessels may also anchor before the Town of St. Fiorenzo; but must beware of a rocky ledge partly above water, at about 500 yards from the coast. There is also another rock at the north end of the town, upon which the sea often breaks; you may pass between the ledge and it, having 4, 5, and 6 fathoms.
