There are only a few milestone intellectual books in the library of American literature and this is one of them. Dr. Perry Miller of Harvard has provided the explanation for the singular, intellectual history of the American people and it is the Puritan concept of Covenant and the Puritan understanding of the religious phenomena of revival. In this book Miller leaves out the personal aspect of Puritan affection with Jesus Christ and how such affection effected the thinking processes of the Puritan mind. And this is my only critique - and it is the critique of others: that Dr. Miller missed the deep and central reality of the life of Jesus Christ in the Puritan mind. This is not intended as a commentary on Dr. Miller's religious sensibilities, but rather on a central fact that seems to be glaringly absent in the work.
The New England Mind represents an essential volume in understanding American intellectual history and, therefore, American history.
