I wrote letters in the papers, and to the Secretary himself, and I laid them before the Congress, in the hope of arresting this fatal work. The effect of my efforts was, that Isherwood was rejected last year by the Senate when nominated for the office he has thus abused; but by pressure from the Department he was finally confirmed, and entered upon his career of destruction and fraud, with the entire approval of his superiors.
