Erasmus had some glimpse of this argument/as it relates to Popery, when he archly hinted, " Et fortasse latius se fundit Spiritus Christi, quam nos interpretamur; et multi sunt in consortio sanctorum, qui non sunt apud nos in catalogo." Convivium Religiosum. But, perhaps, the strength of the general argument for the salvability of Heathen nations cannot be more strongly exemplified, than from the consideration, that it has found its way into the minds even of some who were professed Calvinists. "If we suppose a Heathen," says Mr. Newton, "brought to a sense of his misery; to a conviction, that he cannot be happy without the favour of the great Lord of the world; to a feeling of guilt, and desire of mercy; and that, though he has no explicit knowledge of a Saviour, he directs the cry of his heart to the unknown Supreme, to have mercy upon him; who will prove that such views and desires can arise in the heart of a sinner without the energy of that Spirit which Jesus is exalted to bestow? Who will take upon him to prove that his blood is not of sufficient efficacy to redeem to God a sinner who is thus disposed, &c." Newton's Messiah.
