Darwin's mentor
This book captures the surprising ability of a rather frail young scientist to survive the rigors of the Amazon and the 'clumsiness' of an era without decent cameras or any other tools to do his work. Even so, Bates became the man whom Darwin would consult or refer others to for checking facts about species, evolutionary theories, et.al. "Ask Bates!" That summed it up. This book is so gripping, that I am resolved to somehow get to the British Museum before I die to see his collection collected items there. What a saga. What a human being!
