CHAPTER XIV. AN ASSYRIAN PALACE. The Assyrian palace temples, which all more or less resembled in their style of architecture the first sculptured one of Assurizirpal, were built on high square platforms, the piling up of which to an immense elevation formed a suitable task for the crowds of miserable captives that the warlike kings who reared the palaces brought back from their foreign expeditions. These artificial hills were usually situated close to the city walls, frequently at the corner of the town, so that two sides of the palace, towering high above the city walls, looked towards the open country. These two sides were defended either by wide moats lying without the walls, or, as was the case with Assurizirpal's palace, by having the river on which the city was built flowing past them. The country fronts of the palaces were broken by no doorways, as the palace was only entered from the city side; but the pleasantest of the apartments, perhaps those set aside for the private house of the king, must have been situated there. The building did not cover the entire area of the high platform; there was room on it for one or more open courts, perhaps laid out as gardens, and ornamented with pavilions and sculptures, round which the buildings were ranged.
