When I was in college I had to write a book report. Clever me chose the THINNEST book on the huge rack in the library. Am I glad I did. What a fascinating book! That was back in 1986 and so a few years ago I was thinking about the book again, so bought it again. Then last March we had puppies, and guess which book they found to chew up. Yup, this one. So I bought it again, but that made me reread it again. It is an awesome overview of the incredible structure Milton put in his poem. Remember, this guy was BLIND! He had to recite his lines to his daughters and wife, and they had to write them down, and so he had to keep this grand design in his head. Crump shows that overall the work presents a circular structure, a symbol of God (circle=perfection=God), but that the books that take place in Eden are not circular but are laid out and similar in Time-sequence, symbolic of taking place on Earth where Time is in effect. It gets better than that as certain important lines are placed at numerically significant lines - e.g., Man falls in the Ninth book, at line 999. Lots of really interesting details; makes you even more amazed at Milton's achievement. Sure wish I had Galbraith Crump's email so I could thank him for such a fantastic study that has delighted me for decades.
