The Michigan Mound Builders left behind 10,000 to 30,000 artifacts as a testament to their presence in North America. Controversy has engulfed this find of artifacts mainly because they were here before Columbus of 1492 which is unacceptable to our academics today. Nevertheless, the Michigan artifacts continue to surface even today in the state of Michigan. This is fascinating look into North America's diverse history.

Dr. Henriette Mertz's "The Mystic Symbol" is an interesting study of little-known artifacts from the mound-builder culture in Michigan and the upper Mississippi River area. Since this area of architecture of North America has not been widely studied, the book is a great resource to those interested in earlier civilizations who lived on this continent. Dr. Mertz uses outstanding reasoning to support the authenticity of the artifacts found. Dr. Mertz begins with criticisms of the material and reasons why it has been called fraudulent, and then, using her experience from years of testifying in courts, explodes these criticisms one by one. Her logic is expert and never heavy-handed. Other material has been added to the book from other authors, which furnishes some further information but not the same stylistic clarity as Dr. Mertz, but it is an optional read. Dr. Mertz's writing is the main draw of this good volume. The book is full of illustrations and also provides maps.
