Excerpt from The Mustard Tree: An Argument on Behalf, of the Divinity of Christ As this book is intended for the use Of any ordinarily educated person who cares to follow its argument, I have done my best so to write it that it may throughout be intelligible to.a reader without special knowledge of theology or history, who may very likely not be con versant with any language other than his own. Still, after quoting the Fathers of the Church, I have, for the most part, appended the actual text in a footnote.1 This I have done, not in a spirit Of pedantry, but because I feel that those, who are competent to do so, may naturally wish to check my vernacular render ing by comparison with the words of the authority to which I appeal. The limitations Of space, however, sometimes prevented me from giving the original, especially in the case of the longer quotations. But I have been careful always in my translation to reproduce the exact sense Of the author whose words I cite. Such Of my readers as may not be ao quainted with Latin or Greek will, I trust, bear with these ancient languages when they meet their eyes in a footnote, and not count them.
