Organist Doug Duke operated a tiny club in Charlotte, NY, during the second half of the 1960s where he frequently welcomed veteran swing-oriented jazz artists. Fortunately many of these sessions were taped and, although Duke died at 1973 at age 53, this double CD was recently released from the forgotten sessions. Duke, whose flamboyant organ style looked back toward Wild Bill Davis (rather than Jimmy Smith), opens up the proceedings with a lengthy (if somewhat shrill) solo blues and then features such guests as trumpeters Clark Terry, Charlie Shavers, Roy Eldridge and Ray Nance, Toots Thielemans on harmonica, pianist Teddy Wilson, trombonist Vic Dickenson, cornetist Bobby Hackett, clarinetist Sol Yaged, flutist Moe Koffman, vibraphonist Lionel Hampton, Mat Mathews on accordion, guitarist Charlie Byrd and the great tenor Coleman Hawkins among others. Some of the verbal chatter to the audience could have been cut and there are times when Duke's organ overpowers his "sidemen" but most of these performances are fairly rewarding, particularly those of Nance (on "Strike Up the Band"), Eldridge (during a spirited "School Days") and Hampton. Although the best selections could have been released as one CD (Mathews's very slow "Stella by Starlight" is tedious), there are enough moments of interest to make this set worth acquiring. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
