In the discussion of the subject, the author, while mindful of the verities, or established truths, has been hampered neither by the creeds of Christendom, nor the dictum of science. He cannot pretend to have fathomed the depths of the subject, since it is unfathomable. While he thus recognizes the limitations of finite faculties and the vastness of the sphere of unex plored knowledge, he has endeavored to be in all things rational. If he has succeeded in this endeavor he will abide with content any difference of opinion that may exist between the reader and himself.
