Seventeen-year-old Henry VIII was 'a youngling, he cares for nothing but girls and hunting.' Over the years, this didn't change much. Henry was considered a demi-god by his subjects, so each woman he chose was someone who had managed to stand out in a crowd of stunning ladies. Looking good was not enough (indeed, many of Henry's lovers were considered unattractive); she had to have something extra special to keep the king's interest. Henry was considered a demi-god by his subjects, so each woman he chose was someone who had managed to stand out in a crowd of stunning ladies. Looking good was not enough (indeed, many of Henry's lovers were considered unattractive); she had to have something extra special to keep the king's interest. And Henry's women were every bit as intriguing as the man himself. In this book, Henry's mistresses are rescued from obscurity. The sixteenth century was a time of profound changes in religion and society across Europe - and some of Henry's lovers were at the forefront of influencing these events. Kelly Hart gives an excellent insight into the love life of our most popular king, and the twelve women who knew the man behind the mask.

The Mistresses of Henry VIII is, as popular history goes, reasonably good. It definitely doesn?t warrant five stars, firstly since there are some factual errors (mainly getting dates and ages wrong), which, though minor, show carelessness, and secondly since the writing is at times almost cringeworthily sloppy.
For instance, on p. 37: ?Mary had been betrothed to Charles, the heir of Spain and the likely successor to the Holy Roman Empire, and was therefore the future ruler of half of Europe.? The ?was? before ?therefore? should not be there; or alternatively, it could have been, ?and who was therefore the future ruler of half of Europe.?
On p. 66 there?s this clunker: ?The problem was exasperated by the king?s lack of a younger brother.? This should, of course, be, ?The problem was exacerbated?. How embarrassing for the author and also for The History Press, whose editors (if they use them) did not do their job properly.
The author also doesn?t seem to know when to use ?who? and when to use ?whom? ? she keeps using ?who? instead of ?whom?. This is a persistent problem, and really grated on me. How can book editors, of all people, not know the rules about this? Again, that?s assuming they used one.
If you can overlook the at-times disturbingly sloppy writing, the book itself is not a waste of time for those who are interested in the subject, even though it doesn?t contain much information that you won?t find elsewhere. It deserves about 3.5 stars. The information is mostly correct and usually engaging, but the writing leaves an awful lot to be desired.
