The following is his reply: "This question will be answered by churchmen very generally according to the school of ecclesiastical thought or usage in which they have been trained. For the custom prevailed very early, no doubt, of preaching from, or of expounding, the gospel or epistle for the day. But we should say, that it is by no means advisable to confine one's self, for text or topic, to the appointed Scriptural selections. The altered conditions of modern life require that the Christian teacher shall discuss many subjects, for which the prescribed lessons may supply no appropriate text. Forced adaptation of a passage for such purpose should be always avoided. In some cases it were desirable, perhaps, that the preacher should irankly set aside the claims of tradilion altogether and preach on a subject without text, rather than force a verse or a paragraph into unnatural service--for modern preaching must needs be much broader and more varied than that of 'the fathers' was. That was largely ecclesiastical or dogmatic, but to-day there is needed a good deal of the ethical and practical, bearing upon new issues in social relations etc.; not to mention the exigencies created by the progress or by the speculations of science. Of course, at the great epochs of the ecclesiastical year, the preacher will follow the line indicated by the presciibed selections, and it is always belter to take a text from some passage just read to the congregation, when its fitness for our purpose is natural and just.
