Jessie Sullivan has been married half her life, and has become accustomed to her role. But when she returns to the isolated island she grew up on to establish why her mother has been behaving oddly, she is to find a lot more than she came looking for. A loving, exuberant character, who believes herself to be happy, she has forgotten a hidden part of her spirit - the part represented by the beautiful, vibrant and legendary mermaid carved on a chair in the island's monastery. When Jessie falls passionately in love with a childhood friend, now a monk, she discovers a place in herself that she had never previously imagined could exist. THE MERMAID CHAIR is the story of a woman trying to save her outgrown life - the roles, identities, securities and illusions she had created for herself - before finally emerging as something far more alive and powerful.

I enjoyed this book...made me think about things in my own life. It will stay on my shelf next to The Secret Life of Bees...to be read again in the future.

Read the book
I'm not quite finished with it yet, but it is a great read so far. She really gives a great visualization of the setting and the characters.

A good story
Sue Monk Kidd has written another beautiful story. Though not as innocent and playful as bees, it will keep you interested throughout the whole novel. Lifetime even made a movie out of this! It is an unusual story with missing fingers and passionate monks, something that shouldn't be missed as a lovely summer read!

Chick Book
This book was an inspirational, chick book that any woman would enjoy reading. I found myself wrapped up with the main character and had a hard time putting it down. The author has a wonderful ability to describe the emotions that all of us experience during our lifetime. The book left me feeling positive about life and believing in mankind again.

The Mermaid Chair
I chose to read this book because I had loved 'The Secret Life of Bees' by the same author. I did not love this one as much, but it still has a great story. I do not find many books that hold my attention past a couple of chapters, and both of her books did that. Sue Monk Kidd writes in a way that I could picture each scene in my head very clearly. I think that this is a great book and definately recommend it.
