I am a big fan of Mediterranean food - fish, oranges, olives, nuts, lemons, red wine - yum! This book - unsexy, no pictures - is stuffed full of wonderful, wonderful recipes.
Author Joyce Goldstein obviously is very knowledgeable about the culinary idiosyncracies of the different Mediterranean regions, with a food lover's passion for combinations of textures, tastes, and colors. She is consistently faithful to the spirit of the dish and its roots, adding insightful commentary, letting her love of cooking and food shine through the prose.
I have tried many of the recipes, and they are excellent. There is nothing particularly innovative here, just recipe after recipe for simple and unpretentious fare that is tasty, tasty, tasty! This is true Mediterranean soul food - Sicilian Meatball Ragout with Artichokes and Peas; Spaghetti with Tuna, Lemon and Olives; Portuguese-style Grilled Stuffed Lamb Chops. Authentic ingredients and down-to-earth preparation techniques - what more could you hope for in a book called ?The Mediterranean Kitchen??
