Debra Cowan is a fine writer and I enjoy her work. However, this story was just plain dull. The book before this one (THE LONE RANCHER) was much more interesting.
The Cahill siblings are being drawn back to Cahill Crossing because Quin (the eldest) has proof that their father and mother were murdered. The first to arrive is Bowie. With a background in law enforcement, he is the best one to investigate the two year-old murders.
Because he feels guilty about the way he left his older brother, Bowie decides not to stay at the Cahill Ranch; instead, he takes a room at the Widow Dixon's boarding house. Mrs. Dixon is the widow of a lawman and has sworn she will never marry another.
Bowie soon becomes interested in her; however, when he becomes the local law, things cool quickly. Unfortunately, Merritt gets enmeshed in the murder mystery and cannot get herself out of it. Bowie and Merritt's relationship becomes even more strained by Merritt's involvement.
