To the Marquis of Worcester, and a few family letters of the Commonwealth period, the papers described in this Report belong almost exclusively to the latter half of the 17th century. To this calamity must be attributed the absence, from a place where they would naturally be preserved, of almost all traces Of the life and works of the author of the Century of Inventions.
