A must read for anyone who wants to feel the intellectual and emotional aftermaths of the German Occupation of France. Particularly informative about the split in the Left between Stalinists and Socialists. As a novel it is flat out garrulous. de Beauvoir's dissection of what her charcters are feeling is often just compulsive talking. She is often insightful, but more often boring. More of interest as an historical piece than as a work of the imagination. The roman à clef aspects of her relationships with Satre and Algren give only minor pleasure and add little to our understanding.
