Though detached he was a partisan, and because he had eaten bread in England and heard her men speak, perhaps because England was quietly folding him in her clumsy, good-natured arms, he was for England and against the vierkleur. He wondered why he did not, for the sake of his own republican tricolour, desire the victory of the vierkleur: that question he could not solve; he merely thought of the thin brown line and stood dumb with those English in front of the dirty placard on the stones.
