Madder Rose's The Love You Save EP could be their best record. It is only four tracks but they are really wonderful. They dial the bubbling excitement of the Jackson 5's "The Love You Save" down to a low simmer, turning the track into a mid-tempo groover with Mary Lorson's vocals schoolgirl sweet and smooth. It is one of the better covers of a Motown song by an indie rock band. The two band originals are among their best Coté's "No Avail" is a slowly rollicking ballad with a great hook, Lorson's "Diane" an aching, intimate lament with some fine feedbacked guitar from Coté. The group's full-length albums were always a bit uneven, this EP is a short, sharp blast of concentrated indie rock goodness.
