A collection of the issues of the uncommon literary journal 'The Lounger'. The collection contains a total of one-hundred and one articles and essays. This publication began in 1785 and ran for almost two years. The periodical is known for having one of the earliest tributes to Robert Burns and his genius. The topics of the essays and articles range greatly. Henry Mackenzie was the editor and main contributor of the periodical. Mackenzie was a lawyer, known for his writing, including another periodical, 'The Mirror', which ran from 1779 to 1780. He was also a join founder of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Other contributors include Mr Abercromby, Mr Craig, Mr Cullen, and more. Bookplate to the front pastedowns, 'William Orme Foster'. With one page of publisher's adverts to the rear of Volume III. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Volumes I and II lack spine labels. Loss to the spine label of Volume III. Rubbing to the boards and spines. Loss to the head of the spines. Bumping to the extremities. Cracks to the head and tail of the joints. Front hinge of Volume II is strained but remains firm. Bookplate to the front pastedowns. Loss to the front endpaper of Volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with some spots. Very Good.
