Before watching the National Geographic film about the lost gospel of Judas, I thought the BIBLE was ? well, the BIBLE. My view was that whatever was in the Bible was the whole story. This NG film was a revelation (no pun intended)!
With the closing credits rolling down my screen, I had to find out more. Bart Ehrman, because he was interviewed by NG, seemed like a great place to start.
Some of the ideas Ehrman poses are new and stunning; I appreciated that he came back at a point from differing ways. It deepened my understanding, which was important -- as someone new to this subject.
I really like the man?s style of writing. By the end of the book, I had a grasp of how this text related to the other Gospel texts ? both those in and outside of the BIBLE.
Ehrman raised the idea that Jesus may have had a completely different relationship with Judas. It was such a novel idea that I decided to study more on the subject of the Gnostic texts and other found texts (that are not included in the BIBLE).
This is my first book by Bart Ehrman, but it won?t be my last!

The rise of Gnostic philosphy?
Mr. Ehrman was part of a small team of scholars to authenticate this manuscript when it became available on the world market. The beginning reads like a spy novel, illuminating the shadowy world of ancient artifacts and the story of how this gospel was discovered, hidden, damaged, rediscoved, authenticated, restored, translated and published. Among the many things that are interesting about this gospel is its view of the apocalyptic teachings of Jesus (a very old and common Jewish tradition at the time). When the promised apocalypse DIDN'T come after the crucifixion, this fostered the rise of Gnostic thinking that looked for another explanation of how the universe works and our basic relationship to it. If you are a seeker who wants to understand the philosphical thinking as it was then, this is a great book. It is thought provoking and as ususal for Mr. Ehrman, he raises more questions than can be answered, by simply looking at scripture.

Great entertainment!
I read this book from cover to cover and it reads like a James Bond like action thriller. Not only that, it describes who the movers and shakers are in the antiquities market. If you have something ancient to sell (I'd like to know about it) then you need this book to get to know what's "out there", the pitfalls and dangers (YES THERE ARE!)as well as the legal issues involved in selling something that will be in the public eye. A well researched, informative and enjoyable read. I highly recommended if your interest is in ancient Biblical texts as well.
