Yehuda Nir was nine years old when the Nazis invaded Poland and the Red Army stormed into his hometown. After his father was murdered, Yehuda, his mother, and his sister fled to Krakow and assumed the identities of Polish Catholics. They migrated to Warsaw, where they found work, but were constantly at risk of being found out. When Yehuda joined the Polish underground and participated in a failed uprising, the Nirs were found out and barely escaped Poland with their lives.
