This is the bitter-sweet story of Oneta, the fictional daughter of Tecumseh, growing up on Mackinac Island during its fur trade days. She recounts her life as a young girl caught between her native Ojibwa and the French Canadians, candidly, but with no hint of bitterness. After her father dies, her mother marries a French clerk, Pierre, who loves her, but disdains everything Indian. Oneta must translate between her mother and Pierre. Soon a baby is born, but her mother soon dies from small pox. Pierre's mother comes to take them in, but soon Oneta is sent to a girls school in Quebec. She returns eleven years later, now a woman, to Mackinac and is reacquainted with her brother, Paul, now age thirteen. The situation between the Ojibwa and the Whites grows intense and Pierre nearly begins a war that Oneta must quell. Using her influence as Tecumseh's daughter, and with the assistance of the new doctor, Martin, peace is preserved.
