Leigh Brackett?s The Long Tomorrow is a science fiction classic. The story, written in 1955, occurs decades in the future after a nuclear holocaust has destroyed much of America. Most of the survivors practice a Mennonite form of religion and they reject any form of technology as evil. When hidden technology is discovered the reaction is violent and fatal. Our hero Len Colter is a young man who is fascinated by the stories his Grandmother tells him about the cities that existed before the war, and about a legendary place where technology still exists called ?Bartorstown?. Len and his friend Esau find a forbidden radio transmitter. This starts a chain of events that cause Len and Esau to leave their homes on a long search for Bartorstown. The story is well written and the author keeps the tension going strong to the end. Part of the charm of Brackett?s masterpiece is that it reads like a western novel. I found it to be an engaging story.
