The Loggers/The Old West
The Loggers is one of twenty-seven volumes in the popular Time-Life book series The Old West. This volume focuses on the timber industry and its relationship to the American West. Topics covered include the origins of the timber industry in Maine, tree species in the West, lumber barons, the Wobblies (a labor union), and life in the lumber camps and towns. There is also a short segment on the legend of Paul Bunyan. Picture essays reveal the tools and equipment used by the loggers, mansions of the timber barons, and the various jobs performed by the loggers. The book concludes with a description of the conservation efforts of John Muir, Gifford Pinchot, and Theodore Roosevelt. The numerous contemporary photographs and illustrations enhance the narrative and capture the essence of the forest, the logging industry, and its people. Of the five books I have read so far from The Old West, this one is my favorite. In conclusion, The Loggers does an excellent job of portraying one of the more interesting episodes in the history of the American West.
