His biographer tells us of the great abundance of everything throughout almost the whole world in his time, and also of the general peace. 3 Ad an. 824. VOL. II. II partner in the empire, Lothaire, that in his stead he might, along with the new Pope and the Roman people, legislate (statueret atque firmaref) on what the state of the case seemed to require. (Lothaire) accordingly set out for Italy after the middle of August.... and was honourably received by the Pope. That the gist of all this is that the party.of the nobility which had been put down by Paschal now regained its property and position, is still clearer from the words of the Astronomer.1 He tells us that Lothaire complained that of those who were true to the emperor and the Franks, some had been put to death and the others held up to ridicule, and that through the apathy and negligence of some of the popes, and the blind cupidity of the judges, many had been unjustly deprived of their property.
