During his few days of enforced quiet in the cabin, Jack had thought a great deal about the conversation he had heard between Bill and Dan Farnham. That his present imprisonment on the X Bar B was in some way attributable to the influence of his uncle, Stephen Devereau, he now felt certain; but why, and to what purpose, he could not imagine. The whole transaction seemed a deep, dark mystery which his childish mind could not fathom; but as he grew more accustomed to his surroundings, and came to have a greater affection for the men, he gradually came to grieve and worry less about it; and, as he was a true boy, soon began to enjoy the wild freedom and life of the ranch. When the rush of the spring work was over and the men had more time to be about the home-place, they often took him out for hunting and fishing trips; and, true to his promise, Johnny took him along when he went on his annual fishing trip to the Little Powder, where they camped out in the woods for three days, and where Jack had the most glorious time of his whole existence. Despite some homesick days, and many nights of tears and loneliness, the spring passed quickly away, and it was with almost a thrill of surprise that Jack opened his eyes on a glorious summer morning and realized that it was the thirteenth of July.
