In March 1536 Cardinal du Bellay, having made a hurried flight from Rome to avoid assassination, returned to France, and doubtless Rabelais returned with him4. In March of the 1 Les Epistres de Maistre Francois Rabelais, escrites pendant son voyage aItalic, 1651. The brothers Scevole and Louis de Sainte-Marthe, the authors of Gallia Christiana, who edited these letters, make sixteen of them. But they really form only three dispatches, each dispatch being divided into several parts written on different occasions. The dates of the dispatches are December 30, 1535;Jan. 28, 1536; Feb. 15, 1536. The editors wrongly assigned the first dispatch to 1536. These extant letters are evidently only a portion of. the whole correspondence, as Rabelais refers to letters written by him on Oct. 18 and 22, 1535, and on Nov. 29, 1535. The authenticity of the letters has been recently examined by M. Jacques Boulenger (Rev. des Etudes Rab., 1. 97 ff.) and shewn to be beyond doubt. 2 Marty-Laveaux, 111. 336 ff.
