This is one of the most staggering works of lit crit I've read in a long time. I wonder if you can even call it that because it braves so much territory in such an honest voice...Its almost akin to a theory of modern culture, stretching beyond the purview of novels and psychology to the way we think nowadays. I've been a big fan of Fuchs' "Vision and Revision" for a long time now and this new book is its natural first-born...a look at the suffocating rut of modern literary rebellion and what it's wrought. What is perhaps most jarring is how that "rebellion" has trickled down to almost every facet of our culture, and Fuchs has a sniper's eye for its implausibilities, its hypocrisies, and its indulgences. If I start paraphrasing I'll be here all night...suffice it to say that if you read this book you may really see our so-called intellectual progress in a whole new light.
