The terrified sailors and passen gers crowded round him, eagerly asking who was massacred, and where; for they saw nothing of the sort. He had been in a rapture, wholly absorbed in God, who had enabled him to behold that of which he had so confidently spoken. On recovering himself, he was again overwhelmed with questions; but he, blushing with confusion at having betrayed himself, gave no answer, and retired to pray. They were not long left in suspense as to the meaning of the saint's words; for, on approaching one of the islands belonging to the kingdom of Moro, they found the mangled remains of eight Portuguese lying stretched on the shore, and they then understood that these were the unfortunate men whom he had seen in spirit whilst they were still out at high sea. The bodies were buried on the spot where they were found, and a cross erected over them. After satisfying this duty, Xavier and his companions resumed their voyage, and entered port without further accident. Their reception by the savages was moro according to the confidence of the saint than to the timidity of the inhabitants of Ternate; for, as they descended from the ship, a crowd of natives, conducted no doubt by the impulse of Almighty God, came forth'to meet them, with every demonstra, lion of good will and respect, crying out, in theil own language, " Here is the holy father!' at which he was much gratified, though ashamed and confused.
