The poor fellows had hardly got out their camp-kettles, and kindled their fires, with the prospect of a quiet meal and a few hours' rest under the very same roofs which the week before had sheltered the Hessians, when the drum beat to arms, and they were hurried forward to meet the enemy, who was advancing under Cornwallis by the old road from Princeton.3 Some hours were passed in skirmishing, when Greene was ordered up with a strong detachment to the support of the advance.
