Not illustrated. 1857 Excerpt: ...Gustavus was in hourly apprehension of having his lines forced by Tilly, an incident occurred, which, trifling though it may appear, we cannot forbear to relate. A privy councillor, named Steinberg, who had some intelligence of importance to communicate to his master, entered the royal tent unperceived; in that moment of alarm and anxiety, he found Gustavus occupied, not with the details of war or the calculation of chances, but calmly and earnestly perusing the Book of God. Unwilling to disturb him, Steinberg was about to retire, but the noise he made in withdrawing the curtain of the tent aroused the absorbed reader. "Steinberg," he said, " I find my greatest consolation in the Word of God. I believe," he added, "that Satan lays the most artful snares for princes, who are often tempted to think that they lie under no obligation to render an account to their own consciences or to their fellow-men." It was not unusual to find Gustavus thus occupied. He was wont to retire much to his closet, and with carefully closed doors, apply himself to the study of the Word of God, while his ministers and generals believed him engaged in military or political business. Yet it would be difficult to imagine a busier public life than that of Gustavus; he was at once king, general, soldier, and statesman, and nothing was neglected or forgotten, nothing hastily or imperfectly done. What a reproach to many in our day, who think they cannot find time for the duties of religion!
