An intimate acquaintance with the Prefident, obtained by a refidence of four years at the Univerfity, as his pupil by a fub fequent refidence there, as a tutor; by a cor refpondence with him for feveral years and by an alliance with his family; gave me fome ad vantages for the delineation of his chara???ler, which many perfons, otherwife better qualified by fuperior age and talents, could not pofi'efs. T hefe advantages, however, would not, alone, have imboldened me to attempt fo arduous and, delicate a talk.
