Not illustrated. 1885 Excerpt: ...of the St. George's West Branch of the Birmingham Conservative Association. He remarked-"We are sometimes told that the Conservative working man does not exist in England. But if those who are of that opinion.would come to this meeting, they would see that there are many Conservative working men who take a deep interest in the glory of the British Empire, and are ready to assist in the return of Conservative representatives for the borough in order to stand up for the interests of England at home and abroad, whenever they are assailed by her Majesty's enemies abroad or by our Radical opponents at home." He then proceeded to censure the policy of the Government during the two and a half years they had been in office, particularly their Irish policy, which had been productive of measureless evil. "At present," he said, "the snake is scotched but not killed, and before very long we may look for a repetition of those crimes and outrages the weakness of our Government has caused. It will be as well," he continued, "if the Government keep in mind that 'Security is mortals' greatest enemy.'" He compared Beaconsfield's "Preservation Act," which was "comparatively mild," with Gladstone's "Coercive Act," which had "reduced Ireland to a state of servitude similar to that which existed in Russia." The speaker gave expression to sentiments of sincere sympathy with the condition of the Irish. Speaking of the Earl of Derby, Colonel Burnaby observed that the Conservatives were well rid of him, and that the Radicals would find him a " clog and incumbrance."
