The country is flooded with the histories of great generals, great statesmen, great lawyers and great scoundrels. Why not, then, make room for the history of a great pedlar? If to strike out a path to fame and fortune, never trodden before, be sufficient cause for notoriety, then is Mr Smith fully entitled to such a dis tinction. That he is a mere pedlar of Razor Strops, argues noth ing against his claims for the same industry, perseverance, and fruitfulness of invention, exhibited in his present business, would have made him as successful and as noted in any other profession, had fortune placed him in a more favorable position in the outset. If he had commenced life in the counting-room, he might now have been a princely merchant, instead of the prince of pedlars.
