Lampedusa'a solitary masterpiece, one of the finest works of twentieth century fiction, is set amongst an aristocratic Sicilian family facing social and political changes in the wake of Garibaldi's invasion of Sicily in 1860. At the head of the family is the prince, Don Fabrizio. Proud and stubborn, he is accustomed to knowing his own place in the world and expects his household to run accordingly. He is aware of the changes which are rapidly making men historically obsolete but he remains attached to the old ways. His favourite nephew, Tancredi, may be an ardent supporter of Garibaldi and may later marry outside his class but Don Fabrizio will make few accommodations for the modern world. Containing, for the first time in any language, the full original text, Tomasi di Lampedusa's classic tale lovingly memorialises the details of a vanishing world while retaining its melancholic and ironic sense of time passing and the frailty of human emotions.

Seller's Description:
Not Stated. Very Good Indeed in Very Good Indeed jacket. The first UK edition, first impression of Giuseppe Di Lampedusa's only novel, which chronicles Sicilian life and society during the Risorgimento. The first UK edition, first impression of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Giuseppe Tomasi (1896-1957), known as Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, was an Italian writer, nobleman, and the last Prince of Lampedusa. He is best known for this work, his only novel. This work is considered one of the most important novels in modern Italian literature, as it chronicles the events of the Risorgimento, specifically the period when Giuseppe Garibaldi led his proletariat army, The Thousand, through Sicily. It was first published posthumously in 1958. In 1959, it won Italy's highest award for fiction, the Strega Prize. This is the first UK edition of this work in the English language, translated from the original Italian by Archibald Colquhoun. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is in lovely condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for the odd spot to the fore edge, and for tidemarks to the paste downs and end papers. Small closed tear to the front of the dust wrapper, with a little soiling to the spine, but otherwise a very smart and bright dust wrapper. Very Good Indeed.
