Anyone who wishes to learn about Elihu Burritt (1810-1879) will want to read this book. It includes brief introductions to the various aspects of Burritt's life as self-taught linguist, abolitionist, worker for international peace, ocean penny postage, and other causes, as well as extensive entries from his journal and correspondence. Youngest son in a poor family with ten children, Elihu Burritt apprenticed himself to a blacksmith after his father's death. While working full-time at the forge, he managed to teach himself mathematics and several dozen languages. He went on to help organize a series of Peace Congresses in Europe. This book complements the other major works on Burritt, by Charles Northend and Peter Tolis.
