'The older the zombie, the bigger the death needed to raise it.' After a few centuries, the only death 'big enough' is a human sacrifice. I know because I'm an animator. My name is Anita Blake. Working for Animators, Inc. is just a job - like selling insurance. But all the money in the world wasn't enough for me to take on the particular job Harold Gaynor was offering. Good escapist not particularly scary horror
Ok - let's get one thing out of the way before I get going - I hate zombies. I have an irrational fear of something that doesn't exist. I'm getting cremated just because I don't want to come back as a zombie. Yet I am strangely drawn to them and other undead, and this book is full of the undead.
I read the first couple of chapters on another website that posted them as a teaser. It proved interesting enough to buy a (used) copy.
The first thing that drew my attention is that the undead aren't romantic antihero creatures as seems to be the rage now. For this, I am thankful. How anyone can find a creature that only looks at humans (eventually) as food romantic is beyond me. Of course, I'm not a female, let alone a teenage female.
The writing style, much like this spastic review, seemed a bit choppy at first, almost as if it was started after a long layoff. Once it got going, the writer seemed to be a lot more comfortable with the characters and the book flowed better.
There were a couple of things that bothered me, though.
SPOILER ALERT
When the zombies attacked her in her apartment, if she can talk to them and they listen, why didn't she order them to stop attacking? It would have been a lot more interesting to watch her interogate a zombie than to have the police turn them to ash.
Also, the author doesn't know jack about firearms. Shooting a guy with a 38 in the groin at close range would most likely not only neuter the guy, but he'd need the services of a necromancer to tell his side afterward.
SPOILER ALERT OVER
Overall, I enjoyed this book as escapist entertainment and plan to read more of the series at some point.
