I have tried to read it, only made it about 1/3 of the way through it before giving up. It's very hard to read and understand, and from what I remember, it did not parallel the movie. My guess, most people who have said the book is 'blasphemy' never read it do to it being extremely hard to follow. I might someday try and pick it back up, but I doubt it.

A WORLD OF RIGHTEOUS DEMONS
An incredible insight into the world of Jesus Christ here on earth. Be careful to separate the fact from fiction - easy to say but difficult to do as Kazanzakis weaves a spellbinding odyssey around ancient Jerusalem. What insight and understanding! Isaiah 53:3 tells us this about Jesus, ?He was despised, and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces, he was despised, and we esteemed him not.? Certainly, Jesus must have been frustrated with his disciples whom we hear of as bumpkins ? ignorant and unsophisticated, slow to pick up on a concept. But they were not the righteous demons of Jesus? world. Now, just what kind of world was this, that no matter where you turned you were certain to be oppressed or eventually stabbed in the back? This narrative is not totally validated historically but it is about the people and the world surrounding and intermingling with the last days of Jesus Christ here on earth. As the story unfolds, put your imagination into high gear. What are the double, the triple, the deeper meanings of the words and phrases? The contrasts? Savor the descriptions of the people and the places. See the position each person or group takes. Look at their understanding, their motives, their hopes, their fears. Analyze all the characters Jesus has to deal with and wonder why He just plain didn?t give up and call it quits. Look for the demons as the story is told from a perspective different from the Gospels and discover the world at Jesus? crucifixion. Finally, I have a deep understanding of the gospels.
