Have read may other books dealing with certain individual wars and different account of the people during this time period. This one is great to tie them together. It not only gives reader overview of people and things that affected their actions but is fast moving narrative. Have read about 1/2 of book so far. It is better than fiction very exciting and informative.

Puts Heerodotus in the Real World
I read Herodotus years ago and had trouble understanding where all of the places he talks about are. This edition, with its maps, solves that problem. It puts Herodotus in our world.
